광고를 목적으로 무차별로 발송되는 메일을 스팸메일이라고 한다. 그런데, 스팸메일 (spam mail)이란 표현은 어떻게 생긴걸까?

오늘 회사에서 들은 얘기로는 스팸을 만드는 회사에서 스팸을 광고하는 메일(전단지?)을 각 가정의 우편함에 돌린 데서 왔다고 한다. 음... 사실일까?

구글링을 잠시 해 보니, 의외로 여러가지 설이 떠돌고 있다. ㅋㅋㅋ

The prevailing theory is that it is from the song in Monty Python's famous spam-loving vikings sketch that goes, roughly, "Spam spam spam spam, spam spam spam spam, spam spam spam spam..."

계속 "스팸 스팸 스팸 스팸, ..." 이라고 외치는 노래에서 왔다는 거다.

또 다른 하나는 Pern¹에 기반한 MUSH²라는 게임에서 왔다는데...

... happened onto one of the original Pern MUSHes during their most Sacred Event -- a hatching. ...

So, as the 'eggs' were 'hatching', he assigned a keyboard macro to echo the line:
SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM
...and proceeded to invoke it once every couple of seconds, until one of the wizards finally booted him off.

그 외에도 다른 설들이 있는데, 뭐랄까 개인적으로는 SPAM이 Simultaneously Posted Advertising Message의 약자라는 설이 가장 믿음이 간다.
